the financial statements of U.S. and Canadian based insurance companies (one company from each country)
In Canada, your options can include the Cooperators, SunLife, ManuLife and others.
A) You should understand that there can be slight differences in financial statement presentation/valuation due to IFRS versus U.S. GAAP. You will want to highlight contrasts/comparisons you find in the respective financial statements and notes. In doing so, please see if you can connect any of these differences to IFRS versus U.S. GAAP reporting/rules. Page 15 of the course text briefly outlines IFRS as well as U.S. Accounting rules. There are several other summary sources of this comparison in rules. I have pasted one below:

You should look at the financial statements of your two companies (one in US and the other Canada) and highlight differences in financial reporting due to rules of Accounting. Within your report, you will want to mention why you think that the 2008 financial crisis occurred with greater impact in the U.S. than in Canada. If a similar financial crisis were to occur today, do you think that IFRS-based statements allows for greater transparency in financial reporting and a faster recognition of issues/concerns (facilitate a leading indicator) of benchmarks associated with the financial crisis?

B) Chapter 2 of the LOMA text speaks to Planning and Control. Relate the following 4 weblinks to material in the financial statements and the concept of performance management in relation to concepts of the Balanced Scorecard and how they can be used to facilitate the achievement of corporate goals. What “service cycles” can you identify listed within the statements for your two insurance companies that might best identify/track Controllable versus Non-Controllable costs/segments? How is information technology to support the Control as well as the corporate objectives described in the financial statements?

C) Chapter 4 discussed Human Resources and the need for data within Performance Management/Measurement. Assess the context of Performance Management relative to the details presented in the financial statements for the U.S.-based and Canadian-based insurance companies you chose. For example, how are the statements prepared so as to assess performance by product line/segment and geographic region? Is there discussion of variance analysis? If so, are the issues or sources of variance (both positive and negative) in the case of your U.S.- based company the same as that of the Canadian-based company? Review performance management relative to the details presented in the financial statements for the U.S.-based and Canadian-based insurance companies you chose. For example, how are the statements prepared so as to assess performance by product line/segment and geographic region? Is there discussion of variance analysis (see weblink below for description of variance analysis? If so, are the issues or sources of variance (both positive and negative) in the case of your U.S.- based company the same as that of the Canadian-based company?
D) Chapter 6 speaks to Financial Management and the use of comparison date. Find the financial statements for the year prior and compare these by preparing and interpreting a Cash Flow Statement for the two companies (a Cash Flow Statement might already be part of the Financial Statement package for the companies you selected). Prepare a brief analysis of the Cash Flow Statement. What have been the major sources and uses of funds in recent years? You will want to look at the Financial Ratios that are part of the financial statements of your two selected companies and you may calculate/derive others. What Financial Ratios are presented in the financial statements? Do they seem to present the same trends that your Cash Flow Statements show? Look at the Annual Reports and listen to the message from the Chairman of Mass Mutual (website link below). Are the pressures that he speaks to the same as you are finding in your analysis of the two cash flow statements? Are these pressures connected to what might be called “Surplus Strain”or challenges with profitability? If so, are they more present in the case of your U.S.-based company relative to the Canadian (or vice versa)? If so, why do you think that this might be the case?
E) Chapter 10 of the LOMA text discusses product development. Reference is made to costing. Part of costing is Period Costs, Product Costs and Overhead Costs. Review the following weblink and relate the working of these 3 Costs to Process and Activity Based Costing approaches to product development. Which method do you think might apply best to your insurance companies and why?
