AAD Writing “Building Paper”

1) Find a building on campus and/or wherever you are located. Look at the building with “fresh eyes”.

NOTE:
You must post a digital image of the building, particularly the part of the building you are describing.

2) Reflect upon the Elements and Principles of Design, in the reading and as discussed in the video and PowerPoint Presentation. You must address all of the terms in this assignment. See a list of the terms below.

Elements:
– Line – Shape – Value – Color – Texture – Space – Mass/Form
Principles:
– Balance – Symmetrical – Asymmetrical – focal point – Proportion – Rhythm – Emphasis – Harmony – Variety – Unity.
Note:
You may not use Mac Court, Matt Arena, Autzen Stadium, or PK Park as your building.

Address the following:

3) – Identify the building: Name, address, and/or description of function. Try to find out when the building was built. Perhaps you can find someone inside who knows when it was built.
NOTE: You must cite references for any information that you glean about your building that comes from websites, books, signs on buildings etc. Any information that you include in your paper that you did not originate, you must cite references within the text and in a bibliography. i.e. – “The John Doe Building was completed in 1938 and was designed by Herbert M. Drinkwater” (http:https://ift.tt/2n1ceKK – accessed 10/5/2013)

4) – Write a detailed description of the building using the Elements & Principles of Design in your description. It is important that you address each of the terms of the Elements and Principles of Design in your description of a building. NOTE – It is not good enough to simply state that your building has an Element (i.e. “Line”) and/or Principle (i.e. “Balance”). You must describe what specific physical architectural features of the building that creates the Element and/or Principle you are discussing. This is very important.

Example:
i.e. “… The entry is a high arched opening with 3 sets of double doors recessed beyond the arch by about 10′. The arch creates a focal point and draws the eye to the entry doors. The exterior is sand colored, with a rough stuccoed texture with red colored brick trim around the arched windows (evenly spaced and approximately 3′ wide by 5′ high and along the exterior face of the building approximately 4′ high from the ground.) The line of the arches creates a repeated pattern (Rhythm) across the entire façade of the building, creating rhythm. The equal distance between the arches also brings a sense of balance and unity to the overall appearance of the building. The sand colored stucco creates a contrast of textures and colors compared to the smooth glass and the red brick trim. On the first floor, the windows are evenly spaced and approximately 3′ wide by 5′ high. The windows have grids that create rhythm within the windows. In addition, the second floor windows are smaller with a decorative stone keystone at the top of the arch, drawing the eye to the top of the arch. The gable roof is slate gray and appears to be a type of slate or manufactured roofing that simulates slate. The roofing is irregular and appears to have a texture as might be found in an “old world” style of building found in Europe…”

4-A) – Note the shapes, the materials, the colors, the entry, the roofline, and the windows, the landscaping.
4-B) – Discuss how the Principles of Design apply to your chosen building.
4-C) – How do these elements make this building unique or similar when compared to other buildings nearby?
4-D) – How do the design elements make this building artistic?

5) – Is this art? Why? – Why not? – Be specific.

6) – Conclusion
– What do you believe the architect (designer – artist) was trying to communicate through their design? What specifically does the image of the building say to you? How does the design of the building reflect the building’s use or cultural context?

Writing requirements:
– Head your paper with the name of the class, term, your name, and date.
– Title your paper.
– Paper to be minimum of 3 page typed or word-processed.
– Type to be 12 point
– Spacing: double spaced
– Use proper spelling, grammar, and English.

– Proper citing of any and all author’s quotes, ideas and/or paraphrasing another’s quotes or ideas is required in all written work. This includes proper in-text citing following the information of another. In addition, you are required to provide a bibliography of sources used in your paper.
