1) Niels and Erica read a slate magazine feature about the limits of using mice in laboratory science and medical research. Erica exclaims: “This article proves that regardless of all their training, scientists blindly or maybe even willingly follow protocol and procedure, even when it’s clear that research is not helping solve urgent medical puzzles.” Niels, in contrast, argues that use of “black 6” mice allowed the community of inflammation researchers to make tremendous inroads. “Without an agreed upon model, doctors would have had even fewer effective treatments than they have today.” Describe Niel’s and Erica’s argument using concepts from the readings. Who, in your opinion is correct? We look forward to reading your opinion, but be sure to base your argument on concepts and ideas that we read or discussed in class.
2) In September 2011, physicists working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, declared that over the past three years they recorded particles that travel faster than the speed of light. Rather than declaring Eisntein’s theory of relativity obsolete, Antonio Ereditato, the scientist leading the experiment cautiously said that they are confident of the results but still reviewing them. A few months later, after it was decided that the results were a byproduct of a measurement error, Ereditato and his colleague was forced to step down from their position (see here). Following the controversy, Albert exclaimed: “This is a sham! A groundbreaking discovery is treated as a measurement error simply because scientists are unwilling to question their dogma.” Christi, on the other hand, explained that the scientific community simply exercised due caution. Using concepts from the readings and class discussions, explain Albert’s and Christi’s positions. Is there a way to reconcile the contradiction between the two positions?
