Respond to classmates post HUMN

Two Substantial Responses (around 125 words each) due Sunday by 11:30 PM ET:In your two Substantial Responses to classmates do the following:A. Further develop their interpretations by enhancing the presentation by adding some new ideas. B. Make reference to something that you found particularly interesting or insightful in their analysis, and explain why you find this detail interesting.1. Pan Gu is the Chinese creation myth where the entire universe was contained in an egg-shaped cloud. In the egg everything was chaos swirling around but in the middle of the chaos was a huge giant Pan Gu. After 18,000 years Pan Gu woke up and broke out of the egg which released all matter of the universe. All the lighter and purer elements rose upward to create the sky and heavens while the heavier impure elements made up the earth. After this separation Pan Gu feared the sky would fall to the earth and the chaos from before would resume. Standing on the earth he supported the sky with his head while he continued to grow. For each year he grew the sky lifter higher from the earth and the earth grew thicker. Eventually he realized the sky and earth were stable so he wouldn’t have to support them any longer. He then died and his body became all aspects of the earth; the mountains, roads, rivers, rain, thunder and soil all came from Pan Gu. Additionally, the moon came from Pan Gu’s right eye and the sun came from his left eye.Chinese culture is centered around balance of chaos and order, dark and light, yin and yang. These concepts of balance between two contrasting aspects is clearly established in their myths. In the Pan Gu myth everything starts out as young and chaotic but grows and becomes ordered. Throughout the story the lighter, yang aspects, elements separate from the darker, yin aspects, elements and Pan Gu ensures these elements remain separated and balanced. When the giant dies his eyes become both opposites, the sun and the moon, continuing the theme of yin and yang.As with other myths this one sets out to explain the creation of everything humans see and interact with, including humans. Furthermore they each set out to explain their cultural identity through the myths of their own creation. Chinese people value balance in all things so their myths convey and integrate these concepts in their stories. The myth of Pan Gu doesn’t seem to have elements of betrayal and revenge interwoven in its stories. Other creation myths seem to incorporate some form of betrayal by the “bad guy” against the creator or overseer of creation.2. The sun, the moon, the stars and of course humans. Where did they come from? Chinese culture is tattered with myths that explain this very idea. Whether it is PanGu, Di Jun or Zhong and Li, all of the myths point to one thing: the belief that a being greater than us created us. Take for instance Pan Gu. He was trapped inside something that the Chinese might know as the cosmic egg. During his many thousands of years trapped inside this egg, he increasingly became restless, and grew tired of being confined so he shattered the cosmic egg. In this myth the egg white became the heavens, the egg yolk became the earth and the smaller pieces of the shattered egg shell became the white of the stars and the stone of the earth. The two large pieces of the shattered egg became the Sun and the moon. In other myths Pangu himself became the heavens and the earth when he died. There are still others that state that Pangu separated the heaven and earth, while he grew up the heaven and earth became farther apart. The myths surrounding Pangu speak of dedication and sacrifice. Pangu gave everything that was his being to keep the heavens and the earth separated. This is in contrast to other myths such as the myth that there was a small crack that separated the heavens and earth. Humans and gods were free to travel between the heavens and earth at will. At one point a being known as Chiyou stired up feelings in people that brought about a revolt and disaster. Humans began to “cheat, steal, disobey their faith and violate the oath between them and the Supreme Diety.” (Yang 66). In order to preserve the heavens, the earth had to be separated from the heavens. The separation of heaven and earth correlates to the Pangu creation myth but the reasoning behind the deities performing the action are direct opposites.
